Grief + Joy

I created this pair of portraits on the theme 'Lost in Translation.'

The portraits use words from non-European languages that describe different kinds of joy and grief - such as the type of joy found in mischief, or the melancholy felt for something unattainable.

The ambiguity of human expression parallels the depth of each word, which is difficult to capture when translated into English, getting "lost in translation."
