3D Design: Planar Investigation

Project type

3D, models, construction, light, installation,

Date

March 2024 - May 2024

Location

Savannah, GA, USA

This was the first project completed in 3D Design course. The aim for this project was to build craftsmanship skills, explore planar construction, and experiment with light and colour in 3D spaces.

I chose to depict the layers of a tooth, as I was familiar with it through textbooks and my parents being dentists. I liked the idea of showing the depth of the tooth; something so small yet holding so much. I did simplify the diagrams by a great deal to make it more graphic and less expressionist. This project took eight layers of paper cutting to get the levels of light and shadow introduced by the translucent red panelling on the top of the box. When the intensity of light changes, the mood of the piece also feels like it is at different depths in the mouth.

(3-dimensional work has interested me from a packaging industry point of view. In my final quarter at SCAD, I enrolled in a 3D Design class under Professor Stephen Gardner, who pushed us to explore creative, fun ways to use 3D design principles.)
